The macro-sector 08/A2 (Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, Hydrocarbon and Subsurface Fluid Engineering, Safety and Civil Protection Engineering) covers scientific and educational activities in the fields of environmental and sanitary engineering, safety and civil protection engineering, raw and secondary materials, and hydrocarbons and subsurface fluids.
In the field of environmental and sanitary engineering, the scientific-disciplinary contents concern theoretical and experimental knowledge related to pollution phenomena and the dynamics of pollutants in environmental systems; the analysis and evaluation of environmental impact and health, ecotoxicological, and major accident risks, including environmental sustainability certification. Further study is devoted to the design, management, and performance verification of treatment and recovery processes and plants for water, wastewater, and sludge; atmospheric emissions; and systems and plants for the integrated management of urban and special waste. Other relevant aspects include the development of monitoring, protection, and remediation plans and projects for soil, water, air, and ecosystems (within the scope of the sector), and for the mitigation of pollution impacts; criteria, techniques, and interventions for the management, characterization, remediation, and environmental and functional recovery of soils, aquifers, and contaminated sediments (within the scope of the sector); as well as the production and valorization of biogas and other biofuels.
In the field of raw and secondary materials, the scientific-disciplinary contents concern the valorization of primary and secondary resources such as solid waste of civil and industrial origin, as well as technologies aimed at producing raw materials and materials derived from recycling actions for civil society and industry, and the physical treatment of contaminated soils. They also include the study of sampling plans, characterization, design aspects, management, control, testing, safety, and environmental impact of solid particulate treatment processes.
