Alberto Tacchi is a PhD candidate in Energy Engineering at the Department of Energy, System, Territory and Construction Engineering at the University of Pisa. His research focuses on the development of an innovative power-generation cycle for a bimodal ammonia-fueled nuclear propulsion system, with a particular emphasis on systems engineering and turbomachinery design. This work is carried out within the EU-funded BANTER project (Bimodal Ammonia Nuclear Thermal Electric Rocket).

Before starting his PhD, Alberto completed a second-level Master’s degree in Space Transportation Systems – Launchers and Re-entry Vehicles – at Sapienza University of Rome. During this program, he worked at Avio as a System Engineer, where he gained firsthand experience in translating concepts into operational systems. At Avio, he completed a six-month internship focused on performance assessment and trajectory analysis for future launcher configurations.

Alberto holds a Master’s degree in Space Engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, both from the University of Pisa. His Master’s thesis involved reliability analysis of propulsion system architectures for upper stages of launch vehicles, as well as sensitivity studies using Monte Carlo simulations in Python.

Design of the power conversion cycle with a nuclear reactor, using ammonia as working fluid. Preliminary design of turbomachinery. Ongoing activities in which I am involved:
    • System engineering design of the power conversion cycle.
    • Thermo-hydraulic analyses of nuclear reactor cooling channels.

Development of a Propulsion System Analysis Tool for Quick Global Performance Evaluation of a Kick Stage Mission Scenario (L. Blondel-Canepari, A. Tacchi, A. Pasini). AIAA Scitech 2024
